A taste of the book

The card that got me cooking again.

After my husband Bill died, I stopped cooking. Five o'clock would come, and it felt silly to make a supper for one. So I ate toast, for three months.

Then I found my mother's recipe card: flour, an egg, a little milk, a pinch of salt. Butter dumplings. Here it is, exactly as it is in the book, free. It costs 40¢ a plate.

Hilde

Butter Dumplings

One plate · 15 minutes · 40¢

Ingredients

  • ½ cup flour8¢
  • 1 egg19¢
  • 2 tbsp milk3¢
  • Pantry: salt, 1 tsp butter10¢
  • One plate40¢

Method

  1. Stir the flour, a pinch of salt, the egg and the milk together with a wooden spoon for about a minute, until thick and sticky.
  2. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil.
  3. Dip a teaspoon in the water, take a little dough and push it off into the pot with a second spoon. Little pieces, the size of your thumbnail.
  4. When they float, they're done, 2 or 3 minutes. Drain and toss them in the butter.

Questions

Before you buy.

• ◆ •
Is a paper book coming in the mail?

No, and I say it plainly so nobody is surprised. It's digital, and nothing ships. Right after you pay you download the cookbook (US Letter, to read or print at home), the same cookbook in large print, the Winter Notebook and the Winter Price Card.

I'm not good with computers.

You don't need to be. You press one button and the books download. The links also come by email, so you can open them again whenever you like. You don't have to make an account.

Why is it $27 now and $32 later?

$27 is the launch price. It ends at midnight on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26. After that the book is $32.

Is this a subscription? Will you charge me again?

No. One payment, one time. No membership, nothing monthly, no trial that turns into a bill.

Will the prices match my store?

Not exactly, and no book can promise that. Every price is a U.S. national average from the government's own price surveys. Your store will be a little cheaper or dearer, but the order hardly changes: meat makes a plate dear, and eggs, potatoes, beans, rice and flour make it cheap. The Price Your Own Plate sheet shows you how to work out your own from your receipt.

What do I need in my kitchen?

A skillet, a small pot and a sheet pan. A few recipes use the microwave to save time, and only a handful use the oven.

Is it only for older people?

It's for anyone who cooks for one. It's written with older cooks in mind: one pan, small portions, the USDA's safe cooking temperatures, and a large-print edition.

What if I lose the file?

Keep the receipt email: the links in it open your books again. If you lose that too, write to us and we'll send your receipt again.

What if it's not for me?

Contact us within 7 days of your purchase (your Gumroad receipt email shows how) for a full refund.
